Does spray tan come off when swimming in a pool?

Is it ok to swim with a spray tan?

Whether you’re on holiday or looking forward to a cooling dip in the pool at home, you’ll want to separate fact from fiction when it comes to the biggest beauty myths.

So, will fake tan come off in a swimming pool?

Can you swim with a spray tan?

In short, yes you can. However, swimming can cause your spray tan to fade, so it’s best to take precautions. Interestingly, chlorine, salt, or chemicals in the water don’t really affect your spray tan. However, your skin naturally exfoliates when you’re in the water.

With that in mind, it’s best to wear a waterproof sunscreen, spend less time in the pool, moisturise your skin, and avoid exfoliating before and after swimming.

How long does fake tan last while swimming?

Depending the type of tanning product you use and how dark it is, your fake tan usually lasts more than a week but less than 10 days. It lasts longer if you look after it, which means refraining from exfoliating.

Your spray tan will fade faster if you sweat excessively, wear tight clothing, or swim often. The longer you’re swimming in the water, the more your tan will fade.

A good way to maintain your tan if you’re insistent about swimming is to pat yourself dry rather than forcefully with a towel.  It’s also a good idea to use a gradual tanner to top up the colour as well as moisturising.

It’s never a good idea to swim straight after getting your spray tan as you are usually told to wait at least 24 hours before being exposed to water. If you wear contact lenses while swimming, you may also want to check out our guide on whether it’s safe to wear contact lenses in a swimming pool.

Does fake tan come off in a swimming pool?

In time, it can do.

Indeed, prolonged exposure to chlorine and water can cause the fake tan to fade at a quicker rate. However, it’s worth noting that your fake tan won’t immediately come off all at once when you first enter a swimming pool.

What is the best fake tan to wear while swimming?

The best fake tan for swimming pools is one that’s resistant to water.  It will also have a moisturising effect, which helps maintain your tan.

The best tan for swimming pools will keep your skin hydrated but also give to it a wonderful glowing appearance.
